BREAST FEEDING WEEK CELEBRATION 2023 (1/8/2023 to 7/8/2023)

Theme: WORLD ALLIANCE FOR BREASTFEEDING ACTION (WABA)

“Enabling breastfeeding: making a difference for working parents”.

Background: World Breastfeeding Week is officially celebrated on 1-7 August every year by 170 countries. All mothers should be supported to initiate breastfeeding as soon as possible after birth, within the first hour after delivery and should receive practical support to enable them to initiate and establish breastfeeding and manage common breastfeeding difficulties. According to the UNICEF report, about 60 percent of the total babies in the world do not get the necessary breastfeeding for 6 months.

Objectives of World Breast Week 2023:

WBW2023 will focus on strengthening the capacity of actors that have to protect, promote and support breastfeeding across different levels of society. These actors make up the warm chain of support for breastfeeding.

  • Inform people about their role in strengthening the warm chain of support for breastfeeding.
  • Anchor breastfeeding as part of good nutrition, food security and reduction of inequalities.
  • Engage with individuals and organizations along the warm chain of support for breast feeding.
  • Galvanize action on strengthening capacity of actors and systems for transformational change
